After an open call for nominations, we were moved by the sheer number of submissions from across the hospitality sector. Each nomination told a powerful story of leadership, allyship, and action—showcasing the extraordinary efforts being made to create a more inclusive, welcoming industry for all.
This year’s list celebrates a remarkable range of individuals—from seasoned leaders to emerging voices—spanning diverse roles and backgrounds. Whether they’re shaping inclusive policies or building everyday moments of belonging, each champion is helping to make hospitality truly hospitable.
We hope these champions inspire you as much as they’ve inspired us here at Checking-IN.

“I’ve always done things quietly, without expecting applause or recognition, so I’m truly touched and pleasantly surprised to receive this award. Thank you to the committee for selecting me among so many inspiring LGBTQ+ individuals. Each one of us plays a part—whether big or small—in keeping visibility, inclusion, and awareness alive in our industry.
In hospitality, where customer care and genuine service are at the heart of everything we do, LGBTQ+ professionals continue to bring empathy, connection, and authenticity to every interaction. I’m proud to be part of that community.”

"I am incredibly proud and grateful to be named one of the LGBTQ+ 2025 Hospitality Champions, alongside some fantastic people in our industry. There was a time when I couldn’t be open about my sexuality, or I felt pigeonholed because I am gay. Now, I feel incredibly lucky to be in a place where I can advocate for diversity and inclusion - and support others who might be going through a similar journey.”

Heather Hamilton (she/her)
“It’s a privilege to be included in Checking-IN’s 2025 LGBTQ+ Hospitality Champions list. I’ve been lucky to have had the support of other LBGTQ+ leaders and allies throughout my career in hospitality and it means a lot to be able to do the same for others. Visibility and representation in our industry is hugely important and it’s an honour to be able to mentor, support and encourage others in our community to succeed and grow in our industry.”

“I'm truly humbled and delighted to be included as one of Checking In's LGBTQ+ Hospitality Champions. Being out and open in my role means a great deal to me - it's a way to shine a light for others who may be on their own journey. It hasn't always been easy and as a caring and compassionate people manager, I know that sharing my story can create space for others to feel seen, supported, and empowered.
Championing diversity and inclusion isn’t just something I support - it’s a fundamental part of my ethics and leadership style. I believe that creating inclusive environments where everyone feels safe to be themselves is not only the right thing to do, it is essential for building strong relationships both in and outside of work.
I'm so grateful for this recognition and remain committed to fostering a culture where everyone has the freedom and confidence to thrive as their authentic selves.”

Max Simpkins (he/him)
Account Director, Global Sales - Shangri-La The Shard
“Being named a 2025 LGBTQ+ Hospitality Champion is an incredibly meaningful honor. It’s not only a personal recognition, but also a reflection of the collective work so many of us are doing to make the hospitality industry more inclusive, equitable, and human. For me, hospitality has always been about creating environments where people feel safe, seen, and celebrated - whether they are guests staying at the hotel or part of the many incredible teams who make our hotels what they are.
I’m truly grateful to be included in this list, especially at a time when the path toward LGBTQ+ inclusion is facing renewed complexity in many parts of the world. It reminds us how important it is to remain visible, to speak up, and to stand firm in our commitment to equity and dignity for all. This recognition strengthens my resolve to continue advocating for meaningful, lasting change within our industry - and I am so proud to be part of the Shangri-La Group, which actively supports and empowers me to live these values every day. It's a privilege to champion these values and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive as their authentic self.”

Paul Jones-Nolan (he/him)
Group Head of HR - San Carlo Restaurant Group
“I am both thrilled and honoured to be selected and included in the LGBTQ+ Hospitality champions for 2025. Having worked in Hospitality for nearly 30 years I have seen some major changes and developments within this space, but recognise that there is still a lot of work to be done to build on the world where everyone feels welcome and free to express themselves with their whole heart. I work tirelessly with my colleagues to ensure we are creating environments and visibility for all, for a better future. Being thought of as a champion within our community although slightly imposter syndrome driving, does make the work myself and my colleagues do worthwhile. I will continue to use my position and platform for good to ensure we leave this world and particularly our industry in a better place for our future generations!”

Rafael Cagali (he/him)

Sharif Ahmed (he/him)
Events Sales Manager - South Place Hotel
“I'm truly honoured to be nominated for the Checking-In LGBTQ+ 2025 Hospitality Champions Awards.
Over the past 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of working in LGBTQ+ owned and led hospitality spaces, shaped by inspirational leaders who offered genuine support and encouragement. Their impact has stayed with me and continues to guide the way I approach this industry.
This nomination means so much - not just as personal recognition, but as an opportunity to reflect on the importance of creating truly inclusive spaces. I'm especially passionate about championing greater visibility and inclusion for ethnic minorities within the LGBTQ+ community. Representation matters, and hospitality has the power to lead by example in embracing and celebrating diversity.
I am grateful for the journey so far - and committed to paying that support forward every step of the way.”
